Gaelic Football

Kerry is synonymous with Gaelic Football and in South Kerry, football for many is the social and cultural heartbeat of the community. When people call to mind the giants of Gaelic football, the names of South Kerry players such as Mick O'Connell, Mick O'Dwyer, Jack O'Shea, Maurice Fitzgerald and Ger Lynch roll off the tongue.

Seine Boat Racing

More unique to the South Kerry area is the sport of Seine Boat Racing, which is celebrated through the various regattas held in the region throughout the summer.
According to Michael Foley, few sports fully encapsulate the sense of place across the Iveragh Peninsula like ocean rowing.....rowing is part of Iveragh's soul. It lives and breathes as an intrinsic part of people's lives.'
Traditionally Seine boats were used for fishing and it is considered that the sport of seine boat racing evolved simply out of boredom amongst local fisherman.

Today there are 8 regattas held in the region over the summer months and each draws large crowds of spectators. The past glories of crews such as the Casey's of Sneem and the O' Mahony's of Ardcost still live on in local rowing legend.
